Does anyone recall Norwood House

by Christina Clark

I will be coming to Scotland in June and have been trying to find the address of the old family home of the Selkirks and Buchanans.  Alexander and his son David raised Clydesdale horses and the family home was known as Norwood House in Mosspark.  I can't find the specific location on any map or document and would welcome any info or photos. Hi Christina

My wife was a Selkirk and descended from the Selkirks/Buchanans.  We know the house, Norwood, which is on Mugdock Road Milngavie.  It still exists as a fine stone building.  We are 100% certain this was the family house.  (The Mosspark reference may be a distraction.  We do not know of that part of Milngavie being called Mosspark and the Mosspark in Glasgow is something different.)

Are are a member of the Selkirk family too?

Get in touch and we can exchange details.

Peter

Hi Peter,

My husband's grandmother was Agnes Selkirk.  Her father, James Selkirk, came to the United States when he was about 16 in 1883 with his mother's sister (Margaret Buchanan and her husband William Buchanan).  I know that William had some involvement with Clydesdale horses and spent a few years on a farm in Iowa before they eventually settled in Wisconsin.

James' mother, Agnes Buchanan (whose family lived in the house known as Norwood in Milngavie) married Alexander Selkirk and he died at a fairly young age.  She later moved back to Norwood.  I would love to connect and try and get more information.  Unfortunately my plans changed and I am not able go to Scotland in June as I had hoped.  How are you related to the Selkirk/Buchanans?  I would also love to find out if you have any old family pictures.  Christina

Hi Peter,

I am not sure either the best way of getting in touch. Is there any chance you are a member of Ancestry.com? I would love to share information. Christina

Yes.  My son, my wife and me have been working to get our family tree on Ancestry.com   So that can provide the link we need.  The four strands (our kids 4 grandparents) are Selkirk/Brereton/Overend/Martin.   There is still much to research and some of the stuff you will want is not on it yet, but can be added.  You/your husband are just off the line we are on.

My wife grandfather's sister and brother are two Selkirks that went to Wisconsin, so we are very distantly related.

Are you too on Ancestry.com?  Have you a family tree??  How can we find you on it???

Best wishes coz.   Peter and Elaine Martin (nee Selkirk)

I have put much of the family tree on Ancestry...try ChristinaClark55 (I think this is it...) I believe the sister and brother who went to Wisconsin were my husband's great grandfather, James Selkirk, and his sister, Barbara. They first went to Iowa with James and Barbara's aunt (Margaret Buchanan) and then on to Wisconsin. Was your wife's grandfather Alexander Buchanan Selkirk? Look forward to catching up more. I loaded up the picture you posted in Ancestry. Is the greatgrandmother Agnes Buchanan Selkirk? Best regards, Christina

peter Martin says

Christina,

I am pretty sure it is your greatgrandmother, Agnes Buchanan Selkirk.  And yes, my wifes grandfather was Alexander Buchanan Selkirk.

'Ancestry' may not be best link.  You are using Ancestry.com and I use Ancestry.co.uk.  Sister companies, but I've still to find how to make the link.   However, I think my email address is winging its way to you, so if you can email me, this will be useful as our first direct link.

Regards,  Peter

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
